Weaving contemporary dance, music, and text with the history, culture, and spiritual traditions of the African Diaspora, this astonishing troupe performs innovative, exciting works that bring untold stories to life. In their Virginia Arts Festival debut, the company will perform the world premiere of Hair and Other Stories, an evening-length work that addresses matters of race, gender identity and economic inequality through the lens of physical appearance, including the cultural significance of African American women's hair. Discover entertaining, thought-provoking dance that is "about searching, about remembering, about bringing the past out of the shadows, out of dreams... tough, brave, and sensual" (Dance Magazine).

In partnership with American Evolution:
American Evolution partnership
Virginia Arts Festival is proud to partner with the 2019 Commemoration, American Evolution, which will explore key events in 1619 Virginia that shaped America’s beginnings: the first legislative assembly in the New World, the arrival of the first Africans in English North America, the arrival of women to build community, the first official English Thanksgiving in North America and the spirit of innovation and entrepreneurialism that kept the colony thriving. The 2019 Commemoration will feature events and activities that inspire local, national and international participants to engage in the themes of democracy, diversity and opportunity, and to position Virginia as a global leader in education, economic development and tourism. The 2019 Commemoration has partnered with the Virginia Arts Festival to present performances influenced by the converging of Virginia Indian, English, and African cultures that occurred in Virginia in 1619. Related 2017 dance events include Urban Bush Women, Richard Alston Dance Company, and Lula Washington Dance Theatre. The partnership will continue through 2019.
