Thursday, March 21, 7:30pm, Chrysler Hall, Norfolk

“Graceful, sexy, fiercely enjoyable.”
-The Guardian, London

“Amazing speed, explosive power and linear grace…exhilarating!”
-The New York Times

Richard Alston Dance Company comes to Virginia Arts Festival for their fourth visit in March. A new dance Arrived, Alston’s latest creation, has been commissioned through the Virginia Arts Festival’s partnership with the 2019 Commemoration, American Evolution, marking the 400 years since twenty Africans arrived in Virginia. That same year, 1619, the Italian composer Claudio Monteverdi wrote his seventh book of Madrigals, and Alston has chosen this beautiful music to be the setting for this new work. The dance will be a wonderful collaboration between Richard Alston, his dancers and students of Norfolk’s Governor’s School for the Arts. Don’t miss this coming together of international and local performers in a world premiere!

Also in this program will be Associate Choreographer Martin Lawrance’s exciting Detour with the dancers charging around to the driving rhythms of Michael Gordon, and two dances by Alston, Proverb a flowing dance to the mesmerizing vocal music of Steve Reich and Brahms Hungarian, a rollicking closer full of intricate steps done with a Gypsy panache to be played live by pianist Jason Ridgway.
